Since 2002, White Glove has been a helpful Okeechobee moving company. Though we have helped families relocate to the area, our focus has been the installation of local hunt clubs. Thus, it is an ideal location because it is strategically placed just west of Ft. Pierce. Known as the Gateway to South Florida, Okeechobee has convenient access to both coasts and all of Central Florida. Referred to as Florida’s “inland sea,” the city of Okeechobee offers visitors an old-fashioned Florida vacation. In the same vein, it is also a wonderful place to call home.
Derived from two Seminole Indian words meaning “big water,” Okeechobee is home to about 6,000 full time residents. Interestingly, Lake Okeechobee covers 730 square miles. Hence, making it the second largest freshwater lake in the continental United States after Lake Michigan. Though large, the lake is only about nine feet deep and is in five counties. With a rich history, including one of the deadliest hurricanes of 1928, Okeechobee became the seat of government in Okeechobee in 1926. However, the county was formed in 1917. In the beginning. the town was the center of the cattle industry in south Central Florida. Furthermore, it was also the cornerstone of Florida’s freshwater fishing industry, especially catfish and perch. Dating back to the 1830’s, an important battle was fought in this area during the Second Seminole War. Yet, it wasn’t until the early 1900’s that the area’s commerce and travel grew.
Nowadays, Okeechobee is known as the “Speckled Perch Capital of the World.” So, an annual event was created, The Speckled Perch Festival, sponsored by the Okeechobee Main Street. As a result, it is the largest festival of the year and is held in March. Highlights include a parade, craft and food vendors, Seminole booths with colorful jackets and crafts for sale. Other big events throughout the year include the Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Rodeo and the Okeechobee County Fair. Many find these events and fall in love with the area. Hence, as White Glove we appreciate being their go-to Okeechobee moving company.
Perhaps, the biggest event is the Okeechobee Music Festival. Founded in 2016, the multi-genre music festival features great bands, good food, art and workshops for four days at the start of March each year. Located on 600 acres in Sunshine Grove Okeechobee, Florida, the event has several stages hosting many bands. Also, the event features yoga, meditation and holistic workshops. Attendees can camp on the beaches of Lake Okeechobee or pitch tents and campers in designated areas with entertainment day and night.
