Moving Makes Burgess’ Family Dreams Come True
August 28th, 2018 marked the day the Burgess family was able to officially move into their new space. Thanks to the help of the St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity, St. Lucie Battery & Tire and White Glove Moving & Storage, an adequate wheelchair accessible house is now where Passion and her family can call home.
After being hit by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting in 2005, Passion Burgess was left a paraplegic at the age of 18. Enduring physical therapy and a pregnancy at the same time, Passion found faith and hope and was able to give birth to a healthy boy, Elijah. This story of overcoming and beating the odds is inspiring and her motto of “once you take the DIS out of DISABILITY, you have the ABILITY to do anything” really had business partner throughout the Treasure Coast eager to step up and lend a hand.
“One of the joys of working with Habitat is the extraordinary people who work with us. Passion Burgess is a remarkable woman who has persevered and worked through challenges I can barely imagine. Her light and determination is an inspiration to all. Her school students are privileged to have her as their teacher.” – Bob Calhoun, Executive Director, St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity
Committed to giving back to the community, members of St. Lucie Battery & Tire volunteered on July 7th and laid sixteen pallets of sod for the Burgess family. The enthusiastic team of auto mechanics and tire experts sponsored the home and hosted the house dedication on August 11th, 2018. At the ceremony dedication, SLBT donated a brand-new electric lawn mower to Elijah, the oldest son, to keep the lawn looking good. “Passion and her family are an inspiration to our entire team,” Lindsey Concannon, Marketing Director at SLBT.
Once finishing touches were made to this newly constructed home, a professional crew at White Glove Moving & Storage assisted by moving the Burgess family from their apartment in Ft. Pierce to their new home, full of handicap accessible amenities, in Lakewood Park. In a matter of hours, beds were assembled, furniture was placed, and boxes were organized by room making their transition that much easier. “It is rewarding to be able to give back simply by doing what we do best,” Caleb Clements, President of White Glove Moving & Storage said, “We enjoy a close relationship with Habitat for Humanity as well as St. Lucie Battery & Tire, when we can help in circumstances such as this it is a joy for all our team of movers and office staff to get on board and help make a family’s dream a reality.”
In this new space, Passion and her family’s lives will be changed for the better. Life will be simpler, the neighborhood will be safe, and it will give them a sense of normalcy they never have experienced.
